Online Dating Sites

February 9th, 2009

There are so many different dating sites to choose from and so many varied interfaces.  This poses problems for end users of these sites.  How do you know which dating sites have real members and not loads of fake ones.? Are there hidden charges and annoying marketing techniques such as ‘Sign up for free’ (but pay to email someone)?  Many poor examples of dating sites exist and a lot of them are nothing more than the same sites franchised out to people wanting to run their own web business.  Many more are filled nearly completely with fake profiles and even the big sites have been caught out a few times in this manner (as a few big US court cases will verify).

How do you spot a decent Dating Site?   Well, a good dating site should meet the following criteria:

  1. A good Page Rank (PR is a measure of Google’s opinion on the importance of this site)
  2. No fake profiles, i.e. no profiles made up by the site owners and serious anti-spam measures in place to prevent spammers loading fake profiles
  3. Fees detailed up-front and clearly identified
  4. Clean, uncluttered layout, easy to use and non-stressful user interface
  5. Terms and Conditions (T&C), plus a privacy policy
  6. Plenty of members (but beware sites which say they have millions of members, many are cheating their customers – most of the big Dating Sites are well known, so if you see a site with millions of members, but nobody has heard of them, then the alarm bells should start to ring)
  7. A policy of opt-ins rather than opt-outs.  What this means is that many sites will, by default, sell/share your details onto their ’sister’ sites or other third parties (on these sites, by default you need to opt-out of such blatant privacy violations – reputable sites will only allow you to opt-in to them).  Avoid these opt-out sites and read the small print carefully to make sure your email address does not end up on some mass-mailing list

Pay attention to those 7 points and you should be able to avoid falling foul of scammers or at the very least having your time wasted.  Clickinlove is a reputable site which adheres to the above points and engages only in ethical marketing, so feel free to check it out and see if it has what you are after.

Dating Dangers

February 2nd, 2009

Online dating is generally safer and more convenient than blind dates, but you sometimes hear tales of things going wrong.  Strangely enough, it appears that the stories which hit the headlines usually involve gullible men being ripped-off or travelling to some exotic country to meet a woman, only to be abducted and held for ransom.  There are indeed some real issues with arranging to meet someone you have not previously met and a certain level of common sense should prevail.  However, in matters of the heart, logic and common sense are not always the controlling factors and people do make mistakes.

Firstly, never give money to anyone you have never met.  Secondly, only meet a person for the first time in a place that is neutral and public.  Thirdly, never pass sensitive information to anyone you do not know or trust.  Lastly, for that initial date, always give exact meeting details such as location, time, etc to a friend.  Of course these tips mostly apply to situations where there appears to be a lot of doubt in the authenticity of the person you are meeting, but it won’t hurt to apply them to more apparently ’safer’ dates.

The trick is to keep optimistic, be practical and not let your imagination pick trouble where none exists.  On the same note, do keep your wits about you and play it safe till you know the person you are dealing with, on a face-to-face basis.

Dating Site Layout and Design

November 10th, 2008

Using CSS it is relatively easy to position page elements and produce a design where the content is where it is meant to be (I am ignoring cross-browser compatibility for the moment).  What is less easy is to generate a site design which is pleasing to the eye and follows mainstream graphic design principles.  For the clickinlove dating site I have opted to use a clean zen design, intended to be ordered, uncluttered and very simple to navigate.  The benefits to site users are obvious, i.e. a more relaxing and less confusing experience, intuitive usability and quick loading times.  The benefit to the designer is that CSS is more simple to implement with less clutter on the page to align.  Cross-browser compatibility can be quite tricky when using certain CSS attributes, so the less content you need to position, the more likely your site will look uniform across browsers.

Implementing a zen design is a win-win situation.  On saying that, making a simple clean design look professional, is another thing altogether and requires close attention to the graphic elements on your site. The Clickinlove zen stlye for the dating site will be live next week.
