Free Online Dating – Has it Gone Too Far?

February 18th, 2009

The proliferation of free online dating sites is reaching unmaintainable levels.  There is so much competition and so few quality sites which deliver on their promise.  Niche sites are the real area of growth.  By this I mean sites which cater for a particular subset of society.  Like for instance, dating aimed at a certain religion or sexual persuasion.  People want their choice reduced in the area of dating sites as most people think they know what they want and wish to avoid all the unnecessary profiles they have to wade through.  If you can successfully target a niche which is in demand for dating, then you stand a better chance of tackling the SEO and winning than if you kept your site generic and hence went into direct competition with the big dating sites.

Furthermore, by making your site free, perhaps you are telling your customers that it is a cheap site.  I think there are too many free sites now and it lowers the expected quality of the people using it… spammers, scammers and fake profiles just jump into my mind when I think of free online dating sites.  So consider a nominal fee for your niche site in order to show that your site has a bit of class.  People are willing to pay for that.
